I recently popped into my favorite restaurant in Dallas: R + D
It has a small yet eclectic menu in Preston Plaza with excellent service, they just get everything right the moment you step through the door. And yes, the Kale Cashew salad is mind blowing. You know what else is, the fine print on the menu that states, “no cell phones in the dining room”. I don’t think they can force you to not be on it but I believe it greatly reduces the usage and helps guides those who lack decorum in this area.
In contrast, the next day we decided to walk over to Napoli’s Pizza in Plano where we sat behind an entire family each engrossed in their phones. Not even trying to be discreet, each person holding their phone up high and facing various directions. I cannot even imagine being raised by a mother and father who sat on their phone at dinner time and especially out in public. Thank you Mom & Dad for being on the up and up in this area. Baby step by baby step we are being led into a tech first, non human world. I feel like a lone soldier fighting for the world to remain human.
It’s NOT a small thing. It needs to be said. Having entire families on phones, including the head of the household is harmful for a variety of reasons and this harm goes deeper than we can even imagine. Pretty sure I will get some hate mail for this. =) Watching grown men lead their children in video games over connection, conversation and curiosities of the day hurts my heart.
When families gather around the table, free from distractions like phones and devices, they create a space for meaningful conversations, shared laughter, and the exchange of ideas and emotions. These interactions strengthen the familial bond, creating a sense of unity, belonging, and mutual support.
When we focus on the present moment, savor the flavors of the food, and appreciate the company of our loved ones, we cultivate a sense of mindfulness and gratitude.
This is a reminder of the importance of community and connection.
In a world that often feels isolating and disconnected, family meals provide a sanctuary for human connection and shared experiences. These moments remind us of the value of togetherness, fostering a sense of belonging and strengthening our social bonds.
