As the crisp autumn air descends into North Texas, we seek nature, the outdoors and Dallas hiking trails with every moment we have. And as we creep into the end of November, the scenery here just gets better and better with hues of red, yellow, orange, gold, burgundy all around us. We love living in a neighborhood with mature trees surrounding us everywhere.
As a native Floridian, I feel like Fall in Dallas never gets old.
Here we are walking Knox Henderson with a stop at the delicious Village Baking Co. And I have seen large dogs inside the bakery and out on the patio.
Look at those trees!!! Absolutely amazing!!
8 Dallas Hiking Trails to Explore this Holiday Weekend
Thanksgiving weekend presents a perfect opportunity to embark on an outdoor adventure OR many days of adventure with our boys Dewey & Henry. Its great exercise for us, the dogs and a great opportunity to forage for more cones, goldenrod, walnuts (because I am out of walnut stain) and juniper. If we stay in town for Thanksgiving, we will choose a different trail for each day of Thanksgiving break.
Here are 8 of our top unpaved trails:
1. The Preserve at Maxwell Creek
Located in Murphy.
Wear your hiking boots or shoes because this one is surprisingly rocky and also shockingly hilly. You would never know how much climbing you will need to do in this suburb until you are deep inside this trail. Bring water and a snack because you will be on this trail for much longer than you expect.
2. Cedar Hills State Park
This park is south of the metroplex and provides stunning scenery and a whole new topography. If you can make time to head south, this is a fabulous Dallas hiking trail.
3. LLELA Nature Preserve
Lewisville.
Hiking available on up to 6 miles of trails broken up with different trails.
4. Sister Grove Park
Princeton.
Mostly flat and a great nature spot to get lost in during the Fall.
5. Oak Point Park
Plano.
A little bit of everything at this park that will get busy if the weather complies. One of our faves as its closest to home.
6. Highland Park Trail
Lucas.
Unless you plan on doing all 26 miles, you will want to plan on pausing and turning around at some point. Beware: this trail is very quiet, remote and not many people.
7. Breckenridge Park
Richardson.
We LOVE this trail. One portion is pretty rocky and you will be thankful you wore hiking boots. It also has some perfect spots for family pics. When you find the quarry, you’ll know.
8. The Trails at Squabble Creek
Rockwall.
This is a popular DORBA trail (for the mountain bikers). We love coming out here to bike because its a less popular trail. The holidays can bring out so many more bikers so be sure to enter the EXIT of the trail so you can step aside as mountain bikers approach.
I hope these trails give you the inspo to get outdoors this week. It’s a chance to deepen your connection with your pet, explore new horizons, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
Make sure to gear up appropriately because you could be out on the trail for 2 – 6 hours. Dress accordingly and bring gear such as:
