My local library is a place of joy and wonder. It’s a place where I can escape the burdens of everyday life and lose myself in a good book. It’s a place that I feel welcomes me in while expecting nothing in return. I can allow my adult mind to fall into an imaginative state like that of a child exploring new ideas and new things. And to be honest, if its Summer, the cold quiet air feels amazing!!
Here are just a few of the joys of my local library in Plano:
(note: no matter what town I am in, I typically pop into their library like the one in Allen or the one in Downtown McKinney)
- Access to books and resources. My library has a wide selection of books, movies, music, and other resources to choose from. I can always find something to interest me, whether I’m looking for a new novel to read or a Texas gardening book.
- Free programs and events. My library offers a variety of free programs and events for all ages. There are storytimes for kids, book clubs for adults, and even author talks and workshops.
- A quiet place to study or relax. My library has a variety of spaces to study or relax, including quiet rooms, computer labs, and even private small group rooms that I can use for 2 hour increments.
- A welcoming and supportive community. The staff and patrons at my library are always friendly and helpful. I feel like I’m part of a community when I’m at the library.
- Low cost printing. A color copy is only 60 cents, the best price in town.
I am currently on a sugar detox so I am finding this book cover very appealing. Very!
Libraries + Slow Living
Living slow is a way of life that emphasizes taking things slow and savoring the moment. It’s about slowing down the pace of life and focusing on what’s important. This can be difficult in today’s fast-paced world, but it’s possible with a little effort.
One way that I live slow is to use the library. Libraries offer a variety of resources that can help you slow down and enjoy life. I can sit with a cup of coffee in the cool air conditioning and flip through a magazine. Sift through books to see if its one I would prefer to take home, check out magazines, and audiobooks. I can also attend library programs and events, such as book clubs and author talks.
Here are some specific ways you can use your library to live slow:
- Walk or ride your bike to the library
- Carve out time on a Saturday or even a weekday to spend as many hours as you would like getting lost in books. Reading is a great way to relax and de-stress. When you read a book, you can take your time and savor the story. You can also read in a comfortable place, such as a library chair or a park bench.
If you’re looking for ways to live slow, I encourage you to use your library. Libraries are a valuable resource that can help you slow down and enjoy life.
Here are some additional benefits of using your library to live slow:
- It’s free. Libraries are free to use, so you can save money on books, movies, and other resources.
- It’s sustainable. Libraries reduce the need to buy new books and other resources, which is good for the environment.
- It’s social. Libraries are a great place to meet new people and make friends.
- It’s educational. Libraries offer a variety of programs and events that can help you learn new things.
- It’s a quiet place to work. Harrington library even has glass offices you can reserve for 2 hour time slots.
Here are some additional tips for getting the most out of your local library:
- Get a library card. This will give you access to all of the library’s resources.
- Check out the library’s website. The website is a great way to find out about upcoming programs and events, as well as the library’s collection of books, movies, and music. The library system uses Kanopy.com to offer streaming video (FREE with your library card)
I hope this blog post has inspired you to visit your local library. Libraries are a valuable resource that can offer you hours of enjoyment and learning.
