Our wanderlust remains and this time our adventures led us to explore things to do in Denison Texas.
Exploration feeds our souls and we were so pleasantly surprised with everything that this town had in store for us.
For this particular Saturday morning, we chose this north Texas town that was only 50 miles away from Plano AND a trip that we could bring our furbabies, Dewey & Dutch, along for the ride.
When we were loading up the We had 3 places in mind, Revolution Coffee in Downtown Denison, Waterloo Regional Park for a good hike and the Hidden Hangar Winery. But we found even more hidden gems!
Things to Do in Denison Texas (when you need an escape from Dallas)
First stop, Revolution Coffee Co.
Because when you visit their site and see this ➡️ “Honor. Culture. Service. These are the values that we hold in high regard. To create an atmosphere where every person is recognized for what makes them unique, where they are encouraged and uplifted, and where they are valued as the most important part of what we do.”
You’ve got to go see a cafe like this with your own eyes.
Revolution coffee flows throughout the cutest mercantile with lovely places to sit within the store or at the window or to even pull up a chair to the bar.
And it did not disappoint!
Then we snagged some great items at the Denison Farmer’s Market
Best practice: we always pop our giant cooler in the car with a few ice packs when we head out for a day trip. This way if we run into a produce stand or a farmer’s market, we will be able to keep our purchases safe for our day out.
After walking along main street for a bit of window shopping and pausing in the park downtown,we enjoyed a lovely concert from the Reveler’s Hall band.
Then we pointed our car in the direction of Waterloo Lake Regional Park.
Dutch & Dewey seemed very, very happy that we brought them along.
Waterloo Lake Regional Park in Denison has an incredible 7 mile Hike and Bike trail circling the Waterloo Lake!
The trailhead starts at the boat ramp going counterclockwise for bikers clockwise for Hikers. These directions are important for full visibility, especially if you are walking your dogs.
Be sure and take the Cave trail to see the really neat Cave (similar to the cave at Eisenhower state park).
And wear the proper shoes because there are plenty of uphills, rocks and exposed tree roots (try these)
The Bike trail is a beginner to intermediate trail, bypasses go around the harder features, be sure and note the signs. (you can also find more info about the trail on DORBA.org)
After a few hours of hiking, we discovered this gem on our way back to Downtown.
The Blossom Shoppe.
It was magical and if you find yourself in Denison, please go take a stroll through the nursery.
Of course the giant fiery orange mum just had to make its way back with us.
We popped it in the back with Dutch & Dewey and crossed our fingers that they would not eat it.
Because I had popped into the antique store on Main street earlier in the day, I requested a quick trip back because my eye was set on the copper matchstick holder.
We wandered a bit through the historic district to take a look at the beautiful architecture of an era gone by.
When we arrived back at the antique shop, I gave it another whirl walking through both the downstairs and upstairs. And amongst all of the gems packed inside this wonderful store, thankfully the copper matchstick holder was still at Main Street Mall in Denison Texas.
How beautiful is this painting? I regret not snagging this while I was there ⤵️
After all of that adventuring, we chose to settle down for a moment ➡️ Hidden Hangar Winery
And we just loved how they rolled out the red carpet for us and our very big dogs =)
Our day trip would not be complete if we didn’t come across another gem – Oopsy Daisy (there pumpkins now decorate our front lawn in Plano)
And just down the road from Oopsy Daisy was Huck’s and it was hopping!
So we knew it would be a good spot.
Our conclusion on things to do in Denison Texas
This is a must visit town that will feed your soul on every level. Its close enough for a day trip but far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Dallas and its’ burbs. We do love finding the magic in exploring nature and small towns filled with Mom and Pops and Denison was a magical place for us and hopefully something you will enjoy too.
