People who bring music to the world are some of my favorite people and this is what Lisa Emmick is doing in Dallas. Music has always been part of Lisa’s life. As a music teacher who loves inspiring students in all their artistic endeavors, founding Dallas Piano Academy has enabled Lisa to join forces with other like-minded teachers.
And just so you know, she is a lifelong resident of Northeast Dallas, and loves bringing the arts to families in our community. Super thankful for these creative people in our community that are keeping the arts alive!

Growing up, my mother was a piano teacher and I was always interested in the performing arts – music, dance, theater – you name it! I began teaching piano and flute lessons, under my mother’s guidance, when I was in high school. As an adult, I continued to teach piano and flute lessons. Teaching was part of my life, something I’ve always known. As my own children grew up, I began teaching more and more of their friends and it became a full time career.
I love teaching music to others. Seeing that “spark” of understanding is a thrill whether the student is a child or adult! It gives a great sense of accomplishment and is very satisfying to be able to share this path for creativity with others as each follows their own individual path of discovery to reach their ultimate goals. One of my great interests is history, and I also love sharing trivia and tidbits about the composers, the music and the times in which they lived with my students. It make it all so much more meaningful!
Dallas Piano Academy is truly a family business, with different members of the family contributing their strengths – such as teaching, marketing, and administrative duties.
What’s the one thing that your customers rave about?
Music is all about creativity, and to be really successful you must be confident in your abilities and free of fear of judgement. My students know that they are important as individuals, and as they continue their studies grow as performers wiling to take risks. In addition, the students that I teach truly become part of my family. I want the best for them, and am willing to do whatever it takes to help them succeed!
What is the #1 challenge that your clients/customers have when they reach out to you?
Many of my customers are here because they have been referred by one of my current or past student families. They are seeking ways to expand their own or their children’s horizons, and music is a great way to do that! Dallas Piano Academy offers lessons for all stages of music study, performance opportunities, motivating incentive programs, and experienced, trustworthy teachers who are “in tune” with their student’s goals.
Did you always have a sense that you’d start your own business or a project of your own?
Yes, I come from a family heritage that has a long line of entrepreneurs, so owning my own business comes naturally!
What does a typical day look like for you?
In addition to teaching piano lessons, I teach music and band at a private school in Dallas and my mornings are filled with teaching school music classes. Teaching piano is usually done privately, so it is a lot of fun teaching larger groups of students at one time. After lunch, I begin teaching piano lessons.
I have students of all ages, from preschool thru retired adults. I reserve a bit of time in my schedule each day to plan for both my school music classes and private students, place orders for music, and continually dive into resources that will make me a better teacher.
There are so many great books, courses and seminars available, especially now online, so it is easy to be inspired to continue growing as a teacher and business owner. I also direct a high school musical theater production each year, and during musical season I’ll spend time each evening pouring over rehearsal schedules, studying scripts, costumes and all the details to help give the students the tools they need to craft a winning performance!
My days are very full, but when I have leisure time, I love watching old movies – old Hollywood musicals are my favorites, reading mysteries, biographies and historical fiction, researching genealogy and playing board games with my family.
What is an essential book that you you’ve enjoyed that you think everyone needs to read right away?
I tend to read a lot of the books my students are reading. They will often have something with them when they come for their lesson and are waiting for their turn to begin. I enjoy taking an interest in what interests them, and have found some real gems by reading their recommendations.

The excitement of student accomplishment! Whether my student is young or old, online or in person, and regardless of subject – private lessons, music classes or theater – I love helping others fulfill their dreams and accomplish their goals!
Let’s transition to Dallas:
I love spending time at White Rock Lake when the weather is nice! I also love visiting museums in the Dallas Arts District, and some of my favorite restaurants in Dallas are in the Casa Linda shopping center!
Where would you like to have a staycation in the Dallas area?
I would love to have dinner with Muzio Clementi (see music here)- he was an a true musical entrepreneur who lived from 1752 – 1832. In addition to being a performer (he was once in a contest with Mozart to see who was the better player and it ended in a tie!), he was a composer, conductor and teacher.
He was also a music publisher, notably one of the few people that Beethoven trusted with his works, and manufacturer of the newly-invented piano, causing him to be known as the “Father of the Piano.” He also had a full and interesting life outside the realm of music! I love to eat and linger with friends on some of the many patios close to my neighborhood, so I’d probably take him to one of those. One of my favorites is the Taco Joint.
