9 Reasons Why I Won’t be Watching the Real Housewives Of Dallas
I used to make the excuse that after a long day of working, I just needed to sit down and let my brain relax with mindless television. It seemed like a great excuse to chill out.
In fact, I’m not alone. Here are the stats – –
TV Watching Statistics
These statistics are from research company, A. C. Nielsen Co
American Adults
Average time spent watching television (U.S.) – 5:11 hours
Years the average person will have spent watching TV – 9 years
Percentage of Americans that regularly watch television while eating dinner – 67%
Percentage of Americans who pay for cable TV – 56%
Percentage of Americans who say they watch too much TV – 49%
Value Of Time Spent Watching TV
Number of hours of TV watched annually by Americans – 250 billion hours
Value of that time assuming an average wage of $5/hour: $1.25 trillion
What About Kids and Television?
Number of minutes per week that parents spend in meaningful conversation with their children: 3.5 minutes
Number of minutes per week that the average child watches television – 1,680 minutes
Percent of 4-6 year-olds who, when asked to choose between watching TV and spending time with their fathers, preferred television – 54%
Hours per year the average American youth spends in school – 900 hours
Hours per year the average American youth watches television – 1,200 hours
Number of violent acts seen on TV by age 18 – 150,000
Number of 30 second TV commercials seen in a year by an average child – 20,000
These statistics are not representative of every person, but they are a good representation of our nation, as a whole.
Years ago, I made the decision to reduce TV in my life (and for a time, I gave up my TV for a few years) and especially reality TV. From the outset, Real Housewives seems harmless but shows like this just serve our need to feel like we’re better than other people. And frankly, Dallas and the entire metroplex has plenty of that insanity without this show.
1. Reality Shows Are Not Representative of Reality
2. Watching Reality TV Reflects an Unmet Need
The data shows that many people watch reality TV shows out of a desire for viewing humiliation. In other words, seeing someone else’s messed up life can make us feel better about our own issues, if only temporarily.
3. Reality TV Encourages You to Judge People
4. Reading a book will increase my knowledge
I agree with James Altucher who states –
Reading is maybe the most productive thing you can ever do. Here’s what happens: when you die at the age of 100, you’ve just lived one 100 year life. When I read a book in a few days time, I just absorbed an entire life, curated, of someone I admire or respect.
5. I cannot have one more conversation on Plano versus Dallas
Been there, done that. I get it but I don’t get it. I’ve lived all over the States, a latitude and longitude for an address does not make one superior nor inferior. I am grateful for all that I have here in Collin County.
6. I want to support women who support other women’s success
It’s going to be difficult for women to progress when we are our own worst enemies – check out the Huff Post article here
7. It takes away from mastering my skills
Being a blogger (multiple niche blogs), online marketing consultant, affiliate marketer, trainer, speaker, chocolate connoisseur, tennis player, SUP’er, dog lover . . . the world is my oyster. Most days I wake up with such excitement that I get to use my favorite skills and create my life.
8. I’m busy setting my family up for financial success
With the biggest industrial shift that we have seen in a hundred years, jobs are taken daily by software. I agree with Taylor on his book here > The End of Jobs. I am quickly setting up every stream of income possible for short term and long term success. Its a global economy and my hustle has never been stronger as it is right now. The American dream is no more (there is plenty of other opportunity) but the everything as we have known it is going to be turned upside down.
9. I have a plan for my life
My ‘Painted Picture’ is a 5-page layout of how my life looks, feels and becomes. I write it down and have it posted on my closet door, its something I read everyday. Its my roadmap. Its my reminder. That above all, I am here to have a life full of intent, not a life of keeping me busy with any activity. So when someone asks me if I am up for doing ______, I already know by looking at my plan what my ideal day looks like and if I can’t say “Hell yeah, then its a No”.
For #RHOD, its a No. I am not looking to be busy, not looking to just make others happy by showing up – I stick to a purposeful plan.
Now its your turn. Have you been watching Real Housewives of Dallas? Has it been worth your time?
