This has been an intense season in our household this Spring.
I was out of town for almost 2 months and upon returning, we are already on the cusp on Summer. I feel as if I missed almost all of Spring in Texas. After dealing with curve ball after curve ball, including the loss of my boy Dutch, I think I’ll be able to come up for air.
Our favorite activity is to get into nature.
Whether its enjoying the fruits of my labor in the yard OR the local nature trail where I can forage for some stunning Texas wildflowers to add to my home decor. And don’t worry, I plant thousands of seeds each year along with a few rose bushes and trees. (my favorite nursery in the entire metroplex is Covington‘s).
My favorite flowers to plant are zinnias, rudbeckia, dahlias, gladiolus, sunflowers and strawflowers.
I cannot wait to save the seeds from this years flowers! Saving seeds, especially Zinnia, is one of the easiest ways to get your garden going again in the following year.
Sunflowers are popping up thanks to this large variety pack. This sunflower pack is a great addition to every home plus these seeds are easy for children to handle and take part in planting themselves.
When I arrived home I had a number of James Galway roses to greet me, Gabriel Oak, and soon a few Lady of Shallot. Please don’t ask me where Graham Thomas and the other David Austins are this Spring. Perhaps its been too cool??
The other day I finally got to take a break from work, the lawn, cleaning up the garden, catching up on my sourdough starter Beverly as well as a break from the laundry, the menu planning, the new puppy we rescued from the Plano Animal Shelter.

Oh, and take a peek at these gorgeous roses I discovered at Aldi! Yes Aldi! I guess these would be considered an item from the “aisle of shame” LOL. In 2 months the went from bare root roses to this. All for 8 bucks.
Although I prefer my roses to be a selection from the David Austin catalog, I might buy 5 of these Aldi roses with the budget of one David Austin next year.
I had to stop and smell the roses. All of it. Immediately. As well as the lavender. The magnolias. The rosemary. The lemon balm. The lemon verbena. And the mint. And the magnolias. Heavenly.
I’ve been gone so long and up to my eyeballs in the amount of work I need to catch up on around here.
I find it important to take a breaks and breathe in the beauty and rewards of my labor.
The weeds have seeped into my garden, the magnolia tree has shed what seems to be a million leaves covering garden beds that are desperate for attention from that Texas sun.
And although the work was sweaty and dirty, there is nothing like getting your hands deep in the dirt. Its good for one’s health and definitely good for one’s soul.
I’m thankful for this long Spring, to see the beauty in my yard and to take in the beauty of the wildflowers out in the parks, preserves and on trails.
And when I had gotten a good deal of chores under my wings, I then gathered the happiest blooms I could find and even added a jar of wildflowers from a foraging adventure along with those in my wildflower bed in my front yard. I invite you to head out yourself this Spring and Summer with your kids to find the beauty all around you with nothing needed but a glass jar, fresh water and creativity.
So thankful that I stopped to smell the magnolias.
And thankful to have the ability to bring the outdoors in to beautify our home.
