Hey pawsome Plano, McKinney, Allen, and Frisco dog moms! Buckle up, because summer’s here and it’s gonna be a scorcher! While we love soaking up some rays with our furry BFFs, the Texas heat can be ruff on our pups. But fear not, fellow dog lovers! We’ve got some tips and tricks to keep our canine companions cool, comfy, and entertained all summer long.
Beat the Texas Heat: Keeping Our Pups Cool and Happy This Summer ☀️
Hydration is soooooo important!
- Water, Water Everywhere! We make sure that our dogs have many water bowls set up, one in their usual spot, 2 on the patio, one in the bedroom, to be exact. Make sure your pup has access to fresh, cool water at all times. Invest in a travel water bowl and keep it handy on walks or adventures. (here is the exact bowl we place on the patio in the Summer with ice)
- Funky Ice Cubes! Freeze some yummy broth or dog-safe fruit in ice cube trays for a refreshing and hydrating treat.
- DIY Lick Mat! Spread some peanut butter or yogurt on a lick mat and freeze it. It’ll keep your pup occupied and cool them down at the same time!
Early Morning & Evening Walks are the Best Walks!
- Avoid the midday sun! The hottest part of the day can be dangerous for our pups. Schedule walks and playtime for the cooler mornings and evenings. If you are unable to walk at the optimal time, just cut that walk down to 5 – 10 minutes. Sometimes our walks are just through the yard to go to the mailbox. [big dogs might like this cooling vest which is a pretty reasonable price if you plan on staying in Texas]
- Pavement Patrol: Asphalt gets scorching! Before heading out, touch the pavement with the back of your hand. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pup’s paws. Consider booties for extra protection.
Shady Spots & Cool Fun!
- Backyard Oasis: Create a shady haven in your backyard with an umbrella, kiddie pool, or hose sprinkler. Next time you are in Aldi, check the “aisle of shame” and you might find some super fun yard water toys for dogs.
- Indoor Playtime: When it’s too hot to be outside, keep your pup mentally stimulated with indoor games like hide-and-seek or puzzle toys.
- Frozen Fun: Fill a Kong toy with some kibble and peanut butter, then freeze it for a long-lasting, cooling treat.
Bonus Tip: Frosty Bandanas are a Lifesaver!
Soak a bandana in cool water, wring it out, and tie it around your pup’s neck for an instant cool-down. Or just get one of these chill out bandanas.
Remember to do your best to be mindful of the seasons by keeping an eye on our fur family, we can make sure they have a safe and fun-filled summer!
