Since Spring of 2020, gardening has increased in popularity around DFW. While some consumers have become more concerned about eating a higher quality of fruits, vegetables and herbs others have realized that creating one’s own food supply is possible and even important. In this article, we will explore where to buy seeds in Dallas.
If you haven’t purchased your seeds yet and you are wanting to start a garden, this is the perfect time to begin. In fact, we would encourage to hurry because this planting window will be over pretty soon as Summer begins encroaching on us.
Types of seeds
GMO seeds
These are created when portions of DNA from a different organism are combined with an existing plant’s genetic material to create a new plant with certain desired characteristics. GMO is he acronym for “genetically modified organism” and result from one of the industry’s most controversial practices. This is because genetically modified seeds are bred in a laboratory using techniques such as gene splicing.
So depending on your own research and feelings about this practice you may or may not want to purchase these seeds.
We mention it here so you can consider this in your own seed search.
Specialty seeds
If you are looking for something a bit more exotic than what Home Depot or Lowe’s have to offer, then you might be in need of a source of specialty seeds.
Seed Savers Exchange, Renee’s seeds and Baker Creek Heirloom seeds can be a great resource for items that are a bit more different.
Just be sure to select seeds that will work for our zone in DFW.
Online seed sources
Please note that many of these seed sellers offer physical catalogs. And some of our favorite Youtube gardeners spend their Winters in the pages of these catalogs in hopes of Spring. And of course, you can always look online.
We tend to look on Amazon and then look up the company that is the seller, and continue to research the company online.
