I want y’all to meet Joanna Conlan, the creator of Gramma Jo’s Chocolate O’s. How fun is that to say? Joanna is a third generation baker, wonderful Mom of two and a hockey and basketball enthusiast!! She grew up in chilly Ohio and moved to the DFW area 4 years ago.
This is Joanna’s story…
My business is name is Gramma Jo’s Chocolate O’s. I always remember taking these road trips with my parents to visit my Gramma. I remember being so excited at a very young age about these trips because Gramma loved to bake. She had this flower apron she would wear and she always had one for me and my Mom. You could always count on finding smiles and every ingredient you could imagine in her kitchen. We would gather them and bake.
Imagine flour and sugar and sprinkles flying all over the kitchen. It felt like we could bake until bed time and in the morning we would bake some more. Gramma loved her cookies. There was something about Gramma’s cookies that could take away sadness on a gloomy day and make even the best days even better. When I had my two kids I made sure to carry on the tradition of baking Gramma’s cookies with my Mom. It felt so natural to open a business that could carry on that special idea of baking Gramma’s cookies.
What’s the one thing that your Gramma Jo’s Chocolate O’s customers rave about?
Customers love that I can put anything from their company logo to a family photo to a drawing on my cookies.
What is the #1 challenge that your clients/customers have when they reach out to you?
They are looking for an individually sealed unique treat with their company logo that they can give to co workers, colleagues and clients.
Did you always have a sense that you’d start your own business or a project of your own?
Yes, I’ve always had a very driven, get it done attitude. I’m a leader by nature and love the idea of taking charge of a project and seeing it through to fruition.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Wake up and drink some hot cocoa, walk my dalmatian and then either working on editing images, making cookies or meeting with clients. Then I finish up business for the day and spend time with my family. We have dinner together and read stories. My night usually ends with some reality tv and another glass of hot cocoa.
What is an essential book that you you’ve enjoyed that you think everyone needs to read right away?
Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
[check out the Card Deck version here and the The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens over here]
I’m motivated by learning and improving. I want to hone my craft and continue to push myself to try new designs and techniques. I take classes and attend workshops to learn new skills and perfect other ones. I’m dedicated to my customers and my family and representing both well.
Let’s transition to Dallas:
✔️Six Flags
✔️The Arts District of Downtown Dallas – so much to do there!!
✔️American Airlines Center to see the Stars play or Comerica Center to watch the Texas Legends
Where would you like to have a staycation in the Dallas area?
I would have dinner with the late musical legend Chris Cornell and I would take him to Duffs in Southlake for the best wings I’ve ever eaten.
