Bishop Babies is a creation of Jana Spillers who is a powerhouse when it comes to family education – she is a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, Certified Lactation Educator, Postpartum Doula, New Parent Educator, Child Passenger Safety Technician and Childbirth Educator. Amazing!! In addition to her profession, she is a homeschooling mother of two and serves on two PTAs.
She remains extremely active in her community by coordinating neighborhood volunteers to provide meals to families after the birth of a child, illness or other event. And she even opened a Little Free Library in her yard in North Oak Cliff, providing free books to anyone who wants them.
Someone like Jana is a huge asset to our DFW metroplex and this is her story of Bishop Babies . . .
Bishop Babies is a full service baby concierge offering all the classes and services new parents need to enter parenthood confidently. I started Bishop Babies in 2016 when I had a 22 month old and was newly pregnant with my almost 4 year old. I began with baby wearing, cloth diapering, baby care and CPR classes.
I have since expanded my professional certifications and my services to include lactation support, postpartum doula services, new parent hotline and car seat safety. I am also passionate about helping families eliminate toxins in their homes and discover natural methods of dealing with common health and wellness issues. I focus on wellness education and preventative measures such as nutrition.
My current pet project has been helping families make elderberry syrup to get through cold and flu season. I plan to offer prepared childbirth classes again in the near future as well.
What’s the one thing that your customers rave about?
My clients rave about my lactation services. It is not uncommon for new mothers to come to me after seeing multiple other lactation professionals.
Together, we are able to work through their breastfeeding issues. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a mother and baby overcome their struggles and thrive in a long term nursing relationship.
What is the #1 challenge that your clients/customers have when they reach out to you?
Difficulty with breastfeeding is the most common challenge that brings clients to me. I serve these mothers and babies with virtual and in home appointments. Aside from lactation services, my classes attract many of my clients. They often continue with me for postpartum and lactation care.
Did you always have a sense that you’d start your own business or a project of your own?
I never saw myself as an entrepreneur and venturing out on my own was scary after 15 years of working for major hospital systems. However, I could see gaps in the care and services available to women and infants in the fragile pregnancy and postpartum period. How could I not step up to fill that void?
What does a typical day look like for you?
I usually get up between 4-5 am to work before my children wake up. If I am at the hospital that day, I leave home at 6:30 am and usually don’t return until the following morning. It is not unusual for me to shower and leave again to do home visits that day. If I am not at the hospital or seeing clients, I am working from home. Those days are filled with phone calls/texts and responding to emails and messages in between homeschool lessons.
What is an essential book that you you’ve enjoyed that you think everyone needs to read right away?
To be perfectly honest, I have been in the trenches of working motherhood for the last 6 years and have not been able to sit down and read for my own pleasure.
My reading is currently limited to research studies, continuing education and homeschool resources. My favorite literary genre is dystopian fiction such as The Handmaid’s Tale, 1984, Lord of The Flies, Atlas Shrugged, Farenheit 451, etc.
[side note: this reading list of Jana’s is phenomenal!!]
My children and clients motivate me to keep going. I want to provide my children with every possible advantage and opportunity. My clients deserve the same. If I can help them enter parenthood confidently and provide breastmilk for as long as possible, the long term benefits to the family are limitless.
Let’s transition to Dallas:
Where would you like to have a staycation in the Dallas area?
If I could have dinner with anyone, it would be Eve. It is my firm conviction that the “pain of childbearing” referenced in the Bible is not limited to childbirth. Motherhood is fraught with physical and emotional turmoil, no matter the age of the child.
I would love to share a meal with her at Eno’s Pizza Tavern 🍕 in Bishop Arts, one of our family’s restaurants. What better way to really get to know her than in my own environment
