Meet Nikita Hemani of Simba’s BARKery
Nikita is a marketing professional with a passion for all things dogs.
This is her story of her local barkery ⤵️
Meet Nikita Hemani of Simba’s BARKery
My business is called Simba’s BARKery. While it may seem like it, Simba’s BARKery is not just another dog treat company. Our business model revolves around puppy celebrations. Whether its a dog’s birthday, gotcha day, graduation, or any other occasion, Simba’s BARKery provides the treats to make that celebration complete. We source all our ingredients from local markets and use what is in season.
The idea of Simba’s Barkery began in 2012 when I started volunteering with a local dog rescue as a foster parent. I fostered several dogs of different shape, form, and dietary restrictions. The one thing in common was their unconditional love for us. So why not give back some of this love?
Since then, I started baking treats for all my dogs at home. I researched what is good for the dog and what is harmful and developed treats that are both healthy and tasty. Now it’s time to share these goodies with the pups!
What’s the one thing that your readers and followers love?
We have heard great feedback on our customer service and since inception it has been our goal to serve our customers to the best of our ability. We try to go above and beyond to make sure that our customers (and their pups) feel special about getting treats from us.
We listen to our customers and use that feedback to make better decisions about our service and improve customer experience. We honor hassle-free returns or refunds in case of a rare chance that customers are not satisfied with our product.
What is the #1 challenge that your clients/customers have when they reach out to you? Basically, why are people coming to your business?
Did you always have a sense that you’d start your own business or a project of your own?
Absolutely not! My parents have both been business owners for most of their lives and growing up, I experienced the effort and hard work that it takes to own a successful business. I felt that it was not something for me. However, I am glad that my husband, Saurabh, pushed me to explore the business route.
So far, both my husband’s and my career have been in the corporate world. We have been a small part of the puzzle but when you own your own business, it’s a different story. You are starting the business ground up and you are involved in all aspects of it from marketing, production, finance, etc. And in addition to all the back-end processes to make the business work, you have to build your brand and sell your product. You have to engage your customers.
We knew starting a business was not easy, and the learning curve has been more challenging than we expected. But we are learning a lot on the way and it has been a rewarding journey so far.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I do my corporate job from 8a – 5p. The evenings are spent baking, delivering and running the BARKery.
I do believe in a balanced lifestyle and like to carve out time to spend with my husband and my dog, Simba.
What is an essential book that you you’ve enjoyed that you think everyone needs to read right away?
Delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieh
My family is always a great motivation. Simba’s Barkery is truly a family business and we couldn’t have done it without our family. When we started it was all-hands-on-deck and everyone pitched in to help us out. Whether that was making a customer delivery or helping with last-minute packaging, they were ready to help wherever needed.
However, is there is one person who deserves a little extra credit and that is my husband, Saurabh. Saurabh has supported me since the day I came up with the idea of starting a dog bakery and through to starting and running the business. He has not only provided me with love and support but also been my partner in growing this business. I truly could not have done this without him on my side.
